This week is Scottish Apprenticeship Week and we’re proud to have on board 10 apprentices at Fleming.
We’ve had a chat with Ben Milligan, our fourth-year joinery apprentice, to hear his thoughts on apprenticeship life!
Q: Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
A: I knew I wanted a trade, so I did a college course when I was 15 which gave me a taster for each of them and I was interested in joinery the most. I liked woodwork at school too.
Q: Tell us what you’re working on just now?
A: Right now, I’m helping to build the new extension of the office, but I’m usually based downstairs in the workshop building timber kits for site e.g. cassettes and panels.
Q: What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned so far?
A: I like that the skills I’m learning will also help me in real life. I can do more things around the house like fixing the decking in the garden with my Dad.
Q: Where do you see yourself after your apprenticeship is completed?
A: I would like to stay at Fleming, the guys I work with are great and the whole team is nice to be a part of.
Q: Would you recommend an apprenticeship?
A: Yes, I would definitely recommend getting a trade apprenticeship because of the structure you get. A lot of my friends are doing apprenticeships too like plumbing, bricklaying, electrical etc.
Scottish Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide celebration of apprenticeships. It’s the time for everyone to shout about the benefits work-based learning brings to businesses, people and the economy.
Scottish Apprenticeships help unlock today’s critical economic opportunities, providing employers with the skills to meet their needs now and for the future. The week, which runs from 3 to 7 March 2025, highlights how apprenticeships create a competitive and capable workforce for Scotland.
